Description
This is a vintage Elinor Simmons for Malcolm Starr beaded gown worn by silent movie star Carmel Myers. Worn to the Broadway opening of 'Butterflies Are Free' in 1971, starring her friend Gloria Swanson. The gown is a cream silk base with yarn overlay in various colors and patterns, all heavily beaded with various types of beads in a square pattern with each square lined in bugle beads. The portrait photo pictures her with Swanson and fellow classic actress Fifi D'Orsay.
A stunning gown that glistens and sparkles like crazy. The gown is in good condition with some bead loss, as well as some minor deterioration at the arms, and a hole in the back near the bottom where the yarn has come undone. Some wear near the hem as well. It is for display only, really too fragile at this point for wearing. The lining also has some wear and staining. With the Elinor Simmons/Malcolm Starr label, made in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong. Marked a size 12 but would be smaller in modern day sizes.
The neck is pinned as she wore it in the photos. The belt isn't included, it was just used for the images since it is similar to the one she wore with the gown. The last image of the gown shows it as is without the belt or neck pinned.
Included with the gown is the second original press image of her wearing it at the opening with the information on the back and stamped 1971. The other portrait image is for reference only.
Malcolm Starr gowns are collectible in their own right, here's a rare opportunity to own one worn by a star of the silent screen, that she was photographed in no less.
