MUSEUM 1820s VICTORIAN REGENCY ANTIQUE DRESS CAPE

MOST RARE & INCREDIBLE REGENCY 1820s WOOL CAPE (similar to the one in MET Mseum NY). Last two pictures show similar cape in the Met collection.
We offered today for your consideration is this antique 200 yrs old Victorian Regrncy dress cape trimmed with a large hood.
IN PRETTY NICE ORIGINAL CONDITION, Cloak/capes in one form or another were popular items of dress in the American colonies from the time of the early settlers. This particular type of cloak, is made of a closely woven wool. Finely hand stiched. The hooded cape is a variant of the capuchin, or monk’s habit. It is gathered in a circular shape at the back to stand high without crushing the mobcap or coiffure underneath. The vestee is a practical solution for keeping the upper torso warm while leaving the hands free. By the late eighteenth century cardinals could be bought ready-made in England; thus, it is possible that this cape was imported rather than made in the colonies.
It closes with a large metal hook & a small decorative bow(see pic). Lined in matching heavy thick black cotton.
Antique dress capes from this era are quite valuable & definitely should be in a museum. They are a part of our pioneer history & worth quite a bit of money on their own to find and still be present over 200 years later is a real rarity.
This heavy cape is in very good/presentable condition for its age. A section of cotton which lined the hood has deteriorated & backed with heavier fabric during late Victorian period. There are few small holes on the shoulder(hidden in the pleats). Inner lining has some worn holes(see inside). Otherwise it is quite strong & durable. Flaws are hardly noticeable when display.
