    Product Description:
Listing Update...I am near sold out of these headsets with only a few of them left in inventory.
This is a new-in-the-box Shimano threaded headset (Model HP-R501) with a sealed mechanism design. It is a new-old-stock item, as date coding indicates an early 90's production date. It is a decent quality headset, and according to our Shimano references, this model (and it's sister model...R500...which was the 1" equivalent) was Shimano's recommended headset for nearly all their sport and recreation groupsets during this period (i.e., on the mountain bike side...from the Deore LX groupset and below...and on the road bike side...from the RX100 groupset and below). Although to be honest, we do not see much difference between this model and the older 105 model headsets (i.e., the HP-1050...other than it is a 1" model), as both have sealed mechanisms with resin covered cups.
The one other thing we do want to mention is the orientation of the bearing retainers is a little different from what we normally see with threaded headsets. From our experience, usually both bearing retainers are face down...with the bearings resting on the lower head cone and the upper head cup, but with this headset, the lower set of bearings does rest on the lower head cone (so no difference here), but the upper retainer is oriented upward, so the bearings rest in the upper head cone. We are fairly confident this is accurate information, as we are pulling it from an old shop manual and the page we are referencing has this model headset specifically identified.
It has what is widely considered an oversized 28.6 mm steerer opening, which means it is compatible with a 1 1/8" threaded fork (26 threads per inch) and a stem with a diameter of 25.4 mm (or 1"). More specifically, the crown race inside diameter is 30.0 mm and the frame cup outside diameter (or said another way...the outside diameter of the head race sections that press into the head tube) is 34.0 mm (and we believe all of these measurements are fairly standard for an oversized threaded headset). The stack height (and we define stack height as the combined height of all visible headset components after being mounted on the fork and head tube) is a combined 33.5 mm and it weighs about 140 grams.
As for condition, these headsets are all new and in their original box (very well preserved units over the years).

Note to international customers regarding shipping...
We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case.
Note to international customers regarding customs...
We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
