Product Description:
This is a used Specialized branded threaded headset (that we believe is Japanese made from the mid 80's). It's a very good quality 1" chromoly steel headset that should hold up fairly well under most circumstances. We say this because we believe this was one of the headsets Specialized would match with it's well respected Allez road frames/forks from this era.
There are certainly lighter headsets, as this particular unit weighs-in at 194 grams (per our digital postal scale), but we think the added weight (steel) should translate into added durability/reliability. Please also note the loose ball bearing design, a feature some argue reduces rolling resistance (and I can confirm there are a total of 52 ball bears...so the requisite number of 26 ball bearings for each set of races).
In terms of sizing, this headset has ISO standard dimensions for a 25.4 mm steerer opening, which means it is compatible with a 1" threaded fork (24 threads per inch) and a stem with a diameter of 22.2 mm (or 7/8"). More specifically, the crown race inside diameter is 26.4 mm and the frame cup outside diameter (or said another way...the outside diameter of the head race sections that press into the head tube) is 30.2 mm. The stack height (and we define stack height as the combined height of all visible headset components after being mounted on the fork and head tube) is a combined 43.0 mm (approximate per our digital calipers).
As for condition, there are a handful of items I want to note. First, cosmetically, the condition is very good. The chrome finish still shines and I see little in the way of surface rust. Functionally, I have a few observations. The races are fairly clean, but I do see some minor pitting. I can confirm the minor pitting, as opposed to cosmetic marks on the races, because I have found that by using the pointed end of a small Phillips screwdriver and gently running the point across the races, I can feel even the smallest irregularities...including minor pitting. Over the years I've had folks comment that some minor pitting is not a big problem, while others have said any pitting is a problem. I suppose it's a matter of personal choice, but I still prefer to error on the side of always communicate every observation (especially when it comes to used parts), so that folks can make their own decision. Finally, there is some minor surface rust...most visible on the inside of the cups, but the rust is not located at the bearing contact points of the races (so while I would rather not see the minor rust, I do not see this as a problem). Hopefully my notes are helpful.
Please note we've made an honest attempt to describe the condition of this used offering, but upon receipt (regarding the customer that elects to purchase this item), if the part does not meet expectations, then please contact us so that we may take care of you.

Note to international customers regarding shipping...
We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case.
Note to international customers regarding customs...
We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
