Uyghur Dutar
- a long-necked plucked lutewith two nylon (formerly silk) strings tuned a fifth or sometimes a fourthapart, with seventeen chromatic frets. The dutar is beautifully decorated, likeall Uyghur lutes, with settings in yak's horn and bone. It is used to accompanyfolksongs, and as a supporting instrument in the muqam. A dutar can be found inalmost every Uyghur home, and is the sole instrument which Uyghur women havetraditionally played. It is played glissando, mainly on the upper string butwith some heterophony from the thumb on the lower string. Due to the size ofthe instrument, over 1.30m long, the dutar will arrive in 2 pieces. You caneasily put it together with some carpenter´s glue.
