ZAIRE #804 THE ZAIRE RIVER EXPEDITION COVER #2 OF ELEVEN - - You are bidding on one cacheted and addressed cover franked with Zaire #804, the 1k Foreman-Ali Fight tied by Kolwezi 19-11-74 Circle Date Cancellation. Flap is unsealed.This cover represents the friendship and cooperation between Great Britain and the Republic of Zaire. The assistance given by Zaire in the planning stages which started in 1971 continued into the actual Expedition when they provided 40 members of their Armed Forces and scientific institutions to accompany sections on the river and with scientific and support groups. This Expedition moved by road from Lubumbashi to Kolwezi where this cover was franked. It was at Kolwezi that a Base Camp was set up kindly provided by Gecamines, the National Copper Mining Company. From Kolwezi the reconnaissance went out by land rover and aircraft to investigate the route of the river.
The cachet includes an African warrior who represents the assistance given to the Expedition by local guides and villagers along the river. Elephants were frequently seen grazing on the savannah and bushlands near the river north of Kolwezi.
