    Description

ZAIRE #804 THE ZAIRE RIVER EXPEDITION COVER #4 OF ELEVEN - - You are bidding on one cacheted and addressed cover franked with Zaire #804, the 1k Foreman-Ali Fight tied by Kisangani 1-12-74 Circle Date Cancellation. Flap is unsealed.
This cover represents the friendship and cooperation between Great Britain and the Republic of Zaire. The assistance given by  Zaire in the planning stages which started in 1971 continued into the actual Expedition when they provided 40 members of their Armed Forces and scientific institutions to accompany sections on the river and with scientific and support groups.
This cover was franked at Kisangani on the 1st of December, the day that the river party arrived there. Also on that day they had navigated the famous Stanley Falls situated just opposite the town which used to be called Stanleyville. Thousands of people were able to watch the spectacle.
The cachet portrays and old blind African with diseased eye and represents one of the scientific studies carried out by the Medical Research Team in central Zaire. The emblem in the bottom right corner on front is that of the Scientific Exploration Society which organized the Expedition.
